Reiki @ Ibiza: what is it & session benefits

I have been using Reiki for myself and for the treatment of others for 4 years now. What is it, how does it work and what are the benefits? As a certified Reiki Master (also known as a healer) I have enough experience to write this article for you. I’ll explain the meaning and origin of Reiki. And tell you more about distance Reiki, what you feel during a session and when you could use a treatment. Of course I will also respond to criticism: whether it is proven, dangerous or bullshit!

What-is-Reiki

The meaning & origin of Reiki?

To explain the meaning, we divide ‘Reiki’ into two terms: ‘rei’ (which means universal) and ‘ki’ (which means life energy). It is an alternative – energetic – form or therapy. Reiki was invented by Mikao Usui in Japan and has been taught since +- 1920. There are several forms by now, but I follow the original Usui.

How does it work?

Due to blockages (from stress or emotions), your energy can no longer flow optimally and that can cause various complaints. Reiki helps to soften blockages and boosts your body’s self-healing capacity. It helps you to get back into balance and more in touch with yourself.

Originally it was intended for spiritual development. The treatments are based on hand positions, but it is also possible to experience a session remotely (online). It may sound vague, but when you hurt yourself, the first thing you do is often… reach for the pain with your hand. Reiki can be used for humans and animals.

Benefits of a Reiki session

Reiki can help you with:
– Relaxation & reducing stress
– Pain relief & acceleration of healing
– Better sleep, having more focus & energy
– Less fear, more self confidence & balance
– It helps to release your suppressed emotions
– Lowering tension and clearing your energy field
– Strengthens the connection with yourself/feelings

Is it bullshit, proven or dangerous?

There are many misconceptions about Reiki. The most important thing is that it’s not a replacement for regular care – but a great addition! Did you know that Reiki is included in the additional health insurance in some countries?

So it’s really not nonsense if that is the case. With Reiki you work more holistically than just physically or mentally like a therapist. However, it is good to realize that it’s not a miracle cure that will dissolve all your problems.

There is proven scientific research on this method on Pubmed. Looking at quantum physics (which assumes everything is energy) it is not so vague. But it is a matter of experiencing rather than explaining with the mind.

It’s certainly not dangerous. You learn to work with a positive intention and you can’t force anything (not positive, not negative). Also important: I don’t ‘heal’ you, I help you heal yourself. It is also important what you do after the session.

What happens during a Reiki session?

During a session I serve as a channel for the Reiki energy. We all have a light within us (think of that as our core). Unfortunately, we experience things in our lives. This causes trauma, emotional pain, beliefs, etc. Which dims our light.

Reiki helps to release those layers step by step. During treatment in a practice, you sit on a chair or treatment table (with clothes on). For remote treatment, you can stay at home and we will have contact via video call.

What you can experience during a Reiki session is different for everyone and this can also differ per session. It depends on how sensitive you are, how familiar you are with energy, etc. But either way you will receive what you need.

So what can you feel? This could be: heat, cold, tingling, yawning, emotions, insights, rumbling in your stomach and/or swallowing. Afterwards most people feel relaxed (both physically and mentally), cleaner, lighter, more positive and grounded. You may feel a bit nauseous, get a headache or feel tired after the treatment. That can be part of it (detox), so drink enough water and rest.

The treatment continues working for a few days. If you have been dealing with something for a while, you can imagine that several sessions will be necessary. In this case it’s best to follow up (every or every other week), maintenance could be done once a month or whenever you feel like it!
